This immersive exhibition traces the careers of artists such as Delacroix, Gérôme and Ingres, who were drawn to the mysteries of the distant lands of the Orient. Dazzled by the light that reveals the relief of the landscapes, the colours of the architecture and their spectacular motifs, the Orientalists invited visitors on a pictorial expedition to a new, exotic and bewitching world.
Visitors accompany the artists as they wander through the narrow streets of Oriental cities, the souks and sumptuous palaces, to the arid deserts dotted with oases.
Finally, the curtain rises on Ingres’s La Grande Odalisque, a masterpiece of Orientalism. The dream comes to an end, and visitors find themselves back in the heart of 19th-century Parisian salons, having experienced, like an evanescent mirage, the Orientalists’ dream of the Orient.
