From the 1880s onwards, the Mediterranean seduced artists: like Renoir, Pissaro, Signac and Derain, many of them left Paris and the north of France to settle along the coast, from Collioure to Saint-Tropez. The exhibition sets out to show how their artistic personalities were revealed in contact with these maritime landscapes, and how modern painting was invented. In around forty minutes, visitors are taken from one artistic movement to another: from Impressionism to Pointillism and Fauvism, not forgetting Matisse, Bonnard and Dufy, and finally to one of the greatest colourists of modern art, Chagall.
More than 500 works, now scattered around the world, flood the walls with their brilliance and reveal the variations of these great artists on the Mediterranean, which allowed them to express all their sensibilities.
